Just before the start of the NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and the UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters in Arnhem, 33-year-old Dana Mathewson announced in a touching video on her social media that these Masters are the capstone of her legendary and impressive career.

Earlier this week, she lost to Jiske Griffioen and later to Anniek van Koot, preventing her from reaching the semifinals. In a true thriller on Centre Court at Sportpark Molenbeke, she managed to win her very last singles match from South African Kgothatso Montjane.

In an interview after the match, she talks openly about her decision to quit wheelchair tennis.

“I'm going to miss the friends I've made, the coaches, the training. There are so many different aspects. I think I'll miss a little bit of every single part of being a tennis player.”
